This large songbird has rather long proportions. Long sturdy legs, a long tail, and a long slightly curved bill. They are reddish brown above with thin black-and-white wing bars and bold dark streaking down the breast.
Their favorite foods are black oil sunflower seeds, hulled sunflower seeds, suet, cracked corn, and peanut hearts.
They don’t spend too much time at my hanging feeders, seemigngly preferring to forage on the ground or at my suet feeders.
