I didn’t expect company when I stepped outside the house I was visiting in Sebring, FL—but there they were. A pair of Black Vultures perched calmly in a tree right beside the yard, watching everything with that steady, unbothered confidence they’re known for.
Black Vultures are striking birds once you really look at them. Their plumage is a deep charcoal black, but it’s their gray, wrinkled, bare head that gives them that unmistakable silhouette. Shorter‑winged than Turkey Vultures, they flap more often in flight, and those bright white wingtips flash like signals against the sky.
Up close, though, they’re surprisingly quiet and curious. Seeing them so close to the house felt like a reminder of how wild Florida really is—nature always finds its way right to your doorstep.
