I don’t know what it is, but dogs seem to like sticking their heads out the window when driving.
Trixie was no exception. She always “expected” me to roll down her back window so she could feel the wind in her face – or rain sometimes. During wintertime when it was cold outside, she still needed that window open. That was not always welcome to my human passenger in the front seat if I had one. They would sometimes complain of the cold and ask me to close the window.
I tried taking Trixie with me just about everywhere I went and she loved riding in the car. It was hard to leave her at home if I were going somewhere inside that was not pet friendly. I just couldn’t leave her alone in a hot car. So, I usually planned my outings to include her whenever I could.
As I was working for myself from home, we were together almost 24/7/365.
It was so cute when we would go through a drive-thru at Spangles, Trixie would stick her head out the window in anticipation of getting a treat from the window clerk. They usually obliged. Many of them would allow her to take it from their hands, which she did. If they didn’t have a treat for her, I always had a back up treat in the car.
She seemed to always know when we were going somewhere, as I would put her on the leash and she would get so excited. If we were going on a car ride, I wouldn’t usually leash her as she would follow me out to the car and all I had to do was open that door, and swoosh she would jump right in. That behavior bothered me sometimes because I was afraid she would jump into ANY car that’s door was opened.
She knew her place in the car as well and had her own spot in the folded down seats in the back of my Jeep. Reserving the back for her was a problem sometimes when I was transporting more than one passenger. But, we made the most of it and things worked out okay.
I know it wasn’t the safest way to ride in the car, I wasn’t big on wearing a safety belt myself. But, when Trixie would crawl up front to watch out the front window, I just couldn’t resist allowing her. She seemed to so enjoy all the motion and chaos going on in front of her.
